Feed the Birds....

Its important that we try and provide food and water for our garden birds over the colder months to help them survive.

Do you have an area in your garden for bird feeders? Why not create one, it wont take up much room and is well worth the effort to see all the pretty garden birds that will visit. You might be surprised by how many different types of birds you see.

What do birds like to eat?
  • Fruit: apples, pears and soft fruits
  • Suitable seeds and grains: millet, oats, sunflower, nyjer
  • Insects such as mealworms or waxworms
  • Raisins and sultanas
  • Suet or Fat balls
  • Food scraps such as cooked pasta, rice or potatoes
  • Peanuts - must be unsalted, fresh and they don't contain aflatoxin (a poison caused by fungus mould). Always put nuts in feeders with small mesh.
And don't forget fresh water as this is essential for birds.

There's something quite satisfying about sitting quiet for a while, just in the moment, with a cuppa watching the birds.

Why not take part in the RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch? Its the world's largest garden wildlife survey. Every year hundreds of thousands of people take part, helping to build a picture of how garden birds are faring. Follow the link to find out more...
