Reading Nooks...

Do you have areas in your setting or home for snuggling up and sharing books ? Where do your children enjoy exploring books? Together...alone...in small groups? What do they like to have with them or near them when sharing stories?

Here's some ideas for creating cosy, purposeful Reading Nooks..

  • Make the area cosy with cushions, rugs or and fairy lights
  • Make sure the are is not in a draft or positioned by a walkway
  • Consider how you are going to store and organise the books
  • Make the books easily accessible to the children
  • Have props and small world figures and puppets to bring stories to life

Kinds of literature to have available to children ..

  • Picture books
  • Rhyming texts
  • Books that promote humour
  • Predictable texts
  • Information/Factual books
  • Maps and Atlas
  • Books without words
  • Magazines
  • Concept books
  • Dual language books
  • Easy readers/Phonetic

Why not plan the area with the children. Ask them what they would like in the reading area, what they like to do or have with them when they share a book with others or by themselves.

Create something cosy and inviting.
